Singapore Airlines announced this week that they will be launching a new route called the ‘Capital Express.” This will be a Singapore- Canberra- Wellington return route that will initially fly 4 times a week, possibly increasing seasonally due to demand. Flights will go on sale from the 25th of January for flights from the 21st of September. The prices start from $469 return from Canberra to Wellington or $650 return from Canberra to Singapore.
Singapore Airlines will be using Boeing 777-200 planes to fly this route, retro fitted to include a larger number of business class seats, giving a total of 266 seats/flight. There are talks that Singapore Airlines will partner with Virgin Australia for additional flight options, however this has yet to be confirmed.
Canberra airport itself will undergo some changes. A customs section and arrivals area will begin to be built shortly, they will need to be ready for the late September deadline. Singapore Airlines has also has plans to build lounges at Canberra airport, however time frames for this have yet to be released.
Initial schedule is below. Canberra airport has the bonus of not having noise restrictions for aircraft, unlike Sydney airport. This allows for later flights for the people flying for business.
